Just-ripe and cold blackberry and currant, violets, potpourri, deep black earth, graphite, black sand beaches… deeply mineral and nuanced.
Why we love it: The Syrah grown and made at Troon quickly became everyone’s favourite red wine, and the flagship of the estate in its new, regenerative chapter. Now, the team has started to delineate the characteristics and qualities of the four blocks of Syrah grown in Troon’s Estate Vineyard. The block that the Siskiyou Syrah comprises is grown on pure graphite; the grapes show a more “European,” mineral backbone with quieter undertones of fruit. This is stunning wine – the pinnacle of what is possible through minimal intervention winemaking. It’s a natural classic.
Syrah is one of our favourite grapes, and leads the way at Troon in demonstrating – for holistic farming – just how important it is to plant grapes that suit the climate in order to produce the best-quality wine you can craft.
Only the second Certified Regenerative winery in the world, Troon takes a holistic approach to varieties that are quite unique to Oregon. Think syrah, grenache, roussanne, vermentino, viognier… And the decision to grow more esoteric grapes isn’t a coincidence: after many years of research and experimental planting, the Troon team concluded that these grape varieties grow most naturally in this arid, mountainous region. For white wines, vermentino leads the way, having become the flagship white (and ALWAYS everyone’s favourite!) for this eco-leading estate.
By choosing grapes that are better-suited to the climate, the Troon team greatly reduce the amount of intervention required through the growing and winemaking process; the work that’s left is the proactive, holistic farming that simply helps the vines and the rest of the farm to thrive.
