Why we love it: Formerly called the Kubli Bench Rosé, Troon’s new Ascendant Rosé continues their tradition of crafting serious wines in a category that is often overlooked or underappreciated. We’re BIG fans of excellent rosé at The Road, and Troon’s is a shining example. The grapes for this wine were all grown and harvested with the intent to make a serious pink. Hand-picked at lower sugar ripeness/higher acidity, the grapes are all gently whole-cluster pressed after just a few hours to minimize colour extraction. The juice settled in tank for 24 hours before being racked directly into neutral oak, where spontaneous fermentation and malolactic converstion occur over the course of 6 months. The resulting wines rest sur lie until they are blended in the spring, and then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Only the second Certified Regenerative winery in the world, Troon takes a holistic approach to varieties that are quite unique to Oregon. Think syrah, grenache, roussanne, vermentino, viognier… And the decision to grow more esoteric grapes isn’t a coincidence: after many years of research and experimental planting, the Troon team concluded that these grape varieties grow most naturally in this arid, mountainous region.
By choosing grapes that are better-suited to the climate, the Troon team greatly reduce the amount of intervention required through the growing and winemaking process; the work that’s left is the proactive, holistic farming that simply helps the vines and the rest of the farm to thrive.
